The Little Church with a Big Heart
    By: Sandy Steele

There is a little country church, Colo Baptist, nestled up in the woods off of winding Clay Hill Rd. just outside of Somerset that looks like it could have been used in the series “Little House on the Prairie”. We had passed this church often in our process of moving down here last May and have been fortunate enough to end up living only a half mile away. It is not that it is fancy or big, but instead it is it’s country charm that captivated us, complete with its white exterior and steeple bell. After our move, we were planning to visit the church that Sunday, but I ended up having emergency surgery the Saturday before. Even though everything went well, my husband was beside himself and went to Colo the following day where Pastor David Harmon and all the people prayed for me. I got to meet and get to know Pastor Harmon and his wife, Sister Lynn on their visits while I was recuperating and after I felt well enough, we were both anxious to go over together to their Sunday worship. As soon as we entered the church, we could feel their genuine love they had for us and their thankfulness that I was doing so well. I still get teary eyed thinking of all the prayers that were said for me. During the service they all came over to shake our hands and greet us which really touched my husband and I. God had definitely led us to this little church with its big heart.

Like all of the other small churches around the area, Colo Baptist started out as a one room church with a wood burning stove on June 21, 1942. Even then, it had its prominent steeple. In 1976 it was decided to add on Sunday school rooms and one of the people that helped was David Harmon, who ended up being involved with the church even before he became its pastor in March of 2004.

In August of 2004, because of termites and water problems, the old Sunday school rooms had to be removed. Through a lot of volunteer work and great weather for August, a new two story addition totaling 3360 sq. ft. complete with a baptistry was roofed and enclosed in two weeks. Sister Lynn said that it was very unusual to have had such cool weather in August, but I think that was God watching over this little church as it started to grow.

There is still one charter member going to Colo Baptist and the future of this church can definitely be seen in its children. Even though we are still praying for someone to play our little piano, it doesn’t keep us from singing our praises to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, every week. And if you use your imagination, you might even see Michael Landon or Norman Rockwell in the back row. One thing for sure though, our loving God’s presence can be felt everywhere in this little country church with its big heart.
